Method
- 1
Peel and chop the potatoes and boil in salted water for 15 minutes.
15 min - 2
Mix the beef mince, gluten free breadcrumbs, egg, thyme and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl with your hands. Roll into 16 even meatballs.
- 3
Heat the oil in a wide pan over a medium high heat. Brown the meatballs for 6 to 8 minutes, turning often.
7 min - 4
Pour in 300 ml of your ready made onion gravy (see the base recipe), cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through with no pink inside.
10 min - 5
Drain the potatoes and mash with the dairy free spread and rice milk. Boil the peas for 3 minutes and drain.
3 min - 6
Serve the meatballs and gravy over the mash with the peas.
Tips
- Do not overwork the mixture or the meatballs turn tough. Mix just until combined.
- Wet your hands slightly when rolling so the mince does not stick.
- Cut a meatball open to check it is cooked and steaming hot all the way through.
Storing and freezing
Cool within 2 hours and keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Freeze meatballs in the gravy for up to 3 months. Reheat until steaming hot all the way through.
Questions
Can I use pork or turkey mince?
Yes. Use the same weight. Turkey mince is leaner so add a teaspoon of olive oil to the mix to keep the meatballs soft.
Are these meatballs gluten free?
Yes, with gluten free breadcrumbs and an onion gravy made with gluten free stock and Worcestershire sauce, as the base recipe describes.
