Method
- 1
Pour 400 ml of your ready made onion gravy (see the base recipe) into a wide pan and heat gently, stirring, until bubbling and steaming hot all the way through.
5 min - 2
Add the sliced beef to the gravy in a single layer and warm for 3 to 4 minutes, turning once, until the beef is hot all the way through.
4 min - 3
Boil the peas for 3 minutes and drain.
3 min - 4
Toast the bread lightly and butter it. Lay two slices on each plate.
- 5
Pile the hot beef onto the bread, spoon over plenty of gravy and add a little horseradish on the side.
- 6
Serve straight away with the peas.
Tips
- Slice the beef as thinly as you can so it warms through quickly in the gravy.
- Do not boil the beef, or it turns grey and tough. Warm it gently.
- Add a little more water to the gravy if it has thickened in the pan.
Storing and freezing
Best eaten straight away. Keep leftover beef and gravy in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat until steaming hot all the way through.
Questions
Can I use deli roast beef?
Yes. Thinly sliced roast beef from the deli counter works well and saves cooking a joint. Warm it gently in the gravy.
Can I make it gluten free?
Yes. Use gluten free bread and check the horseradish label. The onion gravy base is already gluten free.
