Ultimate Cottage Pie – Comfort Food Royalty!

This Cottage Pie is comfort food royalty! Rich, savoury minced beef topped with creamy mashed potatoes and bubbling, melted cheese. It’s warm, cosy, and guaranteed to win hearts (and stomachs).

Prep & Cook Time:

  • Cook time: 50 mins
  • Total time: 1 hr 10 mins

Ingredients:

  • 500g lean minced beef
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced small
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 400 ml beef stock
  • 150g frozen peas
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 kg potatoes, peeled and diced (Maris Piper or King Edward)
  • 100 ml milk
  • 50g unsalted butter
  • 100g mature cheddar cheese, grated

Items Needed:

  • Large saucepan or deep frying pan
  • Ovenproof baking dish
  • Potato masher
  • Preheated oven at 200°C (180°C fan) / Gas mark 6

Recipe:

  1. Brown the Beef: Fry minced beef, onion, carrots, and garlic over medium heat until browned and cooked through (about 10 mins).
  2. Get Saucy: Stir in tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce, then add beef stock. Simmer gently for 20 minutes until thickened. Stir in frozen peas, then season to taste.
  3. Mash It: Meanwhile, boil potatoes until tender. Drain, add butter and milk, then mash until creamy and smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Pie Time: Pour the mince into the baking dish, spoon mash over the top, and smooth out evenly. Sprinkle generously with grated cheese.
  5. Bake and Bubble: Bake in preheated oven for 25–30 minutes until golden, bubbly, and irresistible.
  6. Serve Hot: Dish up immediately and watch the smiles (and empty plates) appear.
